Person killed after truck and trailer hit them on Calgary's Deerfoot Trail

A person was killed on Deerfoot Trail in Calgary on Tuesday afternoon after being hit by a truck and trailer.

Police believe the person had pulled onto the shoulder to change a flat tire on their truck.

The truck and trailer hit them while changing lanes to leave the highway, police said.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, and no charges have been laid so far.

Reports identify the location differently: police described it as near 17th Avenue S.E., while another headline placed it at Peigan Trail.

Police warn that changing a tire beside fast-moving traffic is risky, because the shoulder may be narrow and drivers can be exposed to traffic.

Police say drivers who must change a tire there can call for an available police unit to provide backup and visibility.

Early indications would indicate that the offending vehicle was in the process of changing lanes and we believe was probably looking to come off the Deerfoot at the 17th Avenue turn off.
