More than 100 dead geese found in Finland as cause is investigated
More than 100 dead geese were found in several places in North Karelia, Finland, near the Russian border.
The birds were discovered in late October in areas including Tohmajärvi and Joensuu.
Authorities are investigating the cause, which is not yet known.
Samples have been sent to Finland’s food safety agency for laboratory tests, with results expected this week.
Bird flu is one possibility, but officials say tests are needed to confirm it.
The region recorded a bird flu case in a dead barnacle goose in June 2026.
People should avoid touching sick or dead birds and keep pets away; reports of several dead birds should be made to veterinary services.
