Anak Krakatau erupts; authorities set safety zones around volcano

Anak Krakatau erupted at 1:40 a.m.

local time on October 30 in Indonesia.

The eruption lasted 19 seconds and was recorded by a seismograph, but its ash column height was not observed.

Authorities barred people from entering within 5 km of the eruption site and also restricted access within 1 km of new islands to the volcano’s northwest and southeast.

They warned of hot rock, heavy ash, lava flows and possible secondary eruptions if hot lava meets seawater or rain.

People on the coasts of Banten and Lampung were told to stay calm, as officials said the eruption did not mean a tsunami was coming.

Residents and visitors were told to follow local disaster agency guidance and avoid restricted areas.
