SpaceX's Starship reaches orbit as Mars plans remain uncertain

SpaceX's Starship reached orbit for the first time on Sept.

28, during its 14th test flight, carrying satellites for the company's Starlink network.

Elon Musk unveiled the rocket's Mars vision in 2016, presenting it as a way to make human settlement of the planet economically feasible.

Over the past decade, the design changed substantially, and SpaceX has tested the rocket through flights, failures and landings.

The flight carried the first Starlink V3 satellites, a larger generation that SpaceX says can be launched efficiently only by Starship.

Starlink V3 is intended to become a constellation of 100,000 satellites, though that plan depends on future progress.

An analyst sees Starlink deployment as Starship's main role now, while the rocket is also part of SpaceX's effort to support NASA's Artemis lunar missions.

When Starship might fly to Mars remains unclear, and the sources give no schedule.

The rocket is the means, not the end.

The gap between ITS and Starship is real, but I would not consider that a failure.
