Indonesia suspects food-sector violations as chicken and egg prices diverge
Indonesia’s agriculture minister has urged police to pursue suspected food-sector violations, including concerns about chicken and egg prices, fortified rice and palm oil.
Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said farm-gate prices for chicken and eggs fell while consumer prices rose, a gap he said could add to inflation.
He suggested the price pattern may involve manipulation, but did not identify those responsible or give a firm answer on possible fines.
The government provides food-security subsidies to support the sector, but Amran said large businesses benefit more while farmers, livestock breeders and lower-income people bear losses.
He said police task-force action from 2024 to 2026 had named 102 suspects, and that the number could grow.
Earlier, authorities uncovered 212 producers of adulterated rice, with estimated public losses of Rp 99 trillion, while 20 people were handed over to law enforcement in a cooking-oil case.
Police are reviewing four reports about fortified rice, and the minister has asked the national police chief to ensure enforcement continues.
