Google pauses plans for a major data centre campus in Spain

Google has paused plans for a large data centre campus in Spain and an investment worth billions of euros.

The company is waiting for a government decree amid what it sees as an uncertain regulatory climate.

The proposed campus would add Google-owned infrastructure to a country where the company already runs a cloud region in Madrid.

That region opened in 2021 in facilities operated by partners, as part of a five-year investment plan worth 650 million euros that also included a submarine cable.

Google is expanding data centres across Europe to meet rising demand for cloud and artificial intelligence services, but its biggest announced investments so far have been elsewhere on the continent.

Google Cloud declined to comment, and the plans remain on hold pending the decree.
