Wanderers appoint football director to bring departments under one strategy
Western Sydney Wanderers have appointed Mal Impiombato as their first director of football.
The club has struggled for years: since inaugural coach Tony Popovic left, it has had eight coaches and reached the finals only twice.
Impiombato says the club had resources, facilities and talent, but its football departments were working in isolation.
Since arriving in April, he has been trying to improve links between the men’s, women’s, academy and disability programs.
The plan includes clearer responsibilities and shared playing principles to guide recruitment, development and how teams play.
The Wanderers have also appointed Ufuk Talay as coach after his time at rival Sydney FC.
Talay’s first match is a derby against Sydney FC on Friday, as the club begins a new season.
