Glucksmann wins French social-democratic left primary with 66%

Raphaël Glucksmann won the first round of the social-democratic left primary in France, taking 66% of the votes cast.

The result meant there was no second round and gave him a strong base of support among those who voted.

But the primary drew far fewer voters than the contest that selected François Hollande, and the €15 participation fee may have discouraged some people.

Glucksmann campaigned against forming future alliances with La France insoumise, the party led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

The result suggests primary voters backed that break and saw Glucksmann as a useful choice for the presidential campaign.

Still, bringing the wider left together will be difficult, especially because Mélenchon is polling strongly.

Glucksmann can now seek support from other figures in his camp as he moves into the presidential race.
