Madrid government delegate Francisco Martín resigns after PSOE list snub

Francisco Martín has resigned as Spain’s government delegate in Madrid after the PSOE left him off its lists for the 29 November general election.

He had held the post since March 2023 and was involved in the government’s response to a housing-rights camp at Puerta del Sol, which began on 26 September after an eviction.

The camp and its policing became politically contentious, with Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso accusing Martín of acting illegally by not dispersing it.

Vox has said it plans to bring a legal complaint against Martín, and the PP is considering legal action; without a seat in Congress or the Senate, he will not have parliamentary immunity.

Reports differ on what prompted his resignation: some political sources point to internal PSOE tensions, while Martín has denied that disputes over policing or his exclusion from the lists drove his decision.

The Council of Ministers is expected to name a replacement on Tuesday, with deputy delegate Pilar Trinidad Núñez seen as the likely choice.
