Cashews provide protein, fiber, healthy fats and minerals

Cashews contain protein, fiber and fats, along with several minerals.

The USDA lists 533 kilocalories, 17.4 grams of protein, 38.9 grams of fat and 4.1 grams of fiber per 100 grams of raw cashew kernels.

That 100-gram measure helps compare foods, but may not match the amount eaten at one time.

The USDA also records magnesium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium and copper in cashews.

Nutritionist Olga Castañeda says cashews may be included in meals and snacks.

Nutrient figures alone do not prove health effects such as changes in weight or cholesterol.

The amount eaten, the rest of a person's diet and how the cashews are prepared all matter; store-bought versions may be raw, roasted or fried.
