Swansea painter Makenzy Beard competes for TV art prize

Makenzy Beard, a 19-year-old painter from Swansea, is due to compete on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year.

She started painting during the Covid lockdown, using her mother’s old brushes in a garden shed.

Since then, she has shown work at the Royal Academy Summer Show and sold paintings for thousands of pounds.

She has also raised more than £45,000 for charitable causes.

Contestants paint celebrity sitters against the clock, and the winner receives a £10,000 commission to paint actor and musician Damian Lewis for the National Portrait Gallery.

Beard is also preparing a second collection of about 20 paintings, with subjects including animal cruelty, child poverty and mental health.

The competition gives her a chance to test her skills on television, while her new work reflects her growing interest in philosophy and issues she cares about.
