Indonesia makes copyright registration free for 19 types of works
Indonesia’s government has made registration free for 19 types of copyrighted work, including books, music, photographs, films, video games and computer programs.
The policy covers registration with the Ministry of Law, which previously collected the fees as non-tax state revenue.
Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas said the change followed public requests to remove the charges.
The government says free registration should make it easier for people to record their rights and build a stronger copyright system.
Copyright can have economic value for creators, so easier registration may help them protect work they own.
The ministry has also set the fee for requests to block piracy websites at zero.
Supratman said lower copyright-fee revenue could be offset by increasing income from patent services, with patent licensing among the areas the ministry plans to promote in 2027.
