Mexico arrests alleged gang member over extortion
The State of Mexico prosecutor’s office says Ramón “N,” known as “El Toro,” was arrested on October 27 over an extortion case.
Prosecutors allege that on November 30, 2024, he and two other armed men went to a merchant’s business in Tenango del Valle.
They say the merchant was forced to pay 10,000 pesos after an initial demand for 15,000 pesos and a threat against him or his family.
Authorities have identified Ramón as a suspected member of La Familia Michoacana, a criminal group that the state prosecutor’s map says operates in 26 municipalities in the state.
He had previously been detained in connection with the death of a former mayor, but the prosecutor’s office did not explain the basis for that link.
He is being held in Tenango del Valle as a judge considers his legal status; he is presumed innocent unless convicted, and could face up to 70 years in prison if found responsible for the extortion.
