South Korea expands Cheonghae Unit mission area toward Strait of Hormuz
South Korea is expanding the Cheonghae Unit’s mission area from the waters off Somalia toward the south of Oman.
The new area will bring the unit closer to the Strait of Hormuz.
The unit has been operating in the Gulf of Aden.
The government plans to send a maritime patrol aircraft, an explosive-disposal team and unmanned mine-clearing equipment as additional support.
The announcement does not give a reason for the expansion.
It also does not specify when the added forces will be sent.
The next step stated is to deploy those additional assets.
South Korea plans to expand the Cheonghae Unit’s mission area south of Oman, closer to the Strait of Hormuz.
The government plans to add a P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, an explosive ordnance disposal team and unmanned mine-clearing equipment.
A proposed amendment to the unit’s deployment extension would add support for restoring freedom of navigation in international sea lanes to its mission.
The government says participation in any Hormuz freedom-of-navigation operation would require suitable conditions, such as an end to the US-Iran conflict, and fresh approval from the National Assembly.
The plan is presented as preparation for possible mine-clearing work while maintaining the principle of not deploying troops to take part in a war.

We cannot help preparing for when the environment becomes permissive as a member of the international community.
If protection of international sea lanes is requested, we must participate, and we cannot go without preparation.
