German man held over alleged attempt to join Islamic State

A 21-year-old German man is in pre-trial detention after being extradited to Germany on Friday.

Prosecutors allege that he tried to join Islamic State abroad.

They say he left Berlin for Ethiopia in January 2025, intending to travel to Somalia and join the group there.

He never reached Somalia, prosecutors say, and instead went to Pakistan to join Islamic State; he was reportedly arrested there in February 2025.

He is accused of attempting to become a member of a terrorist organization abroad and preparing a serious act of violence that could endanger the state.

The charges concern alleged links to a terrorist group, which has carried out attacks in Germany and elsewhere.

The sources give no date for a trial.
