Mexico's CFE adds about 40 billion pesos to electricity subsidies
Mexico's state electricity utility, CFE, adds about 40 billion pesos a year to electricity subsidies beyond federal funding.
CFE chief Emilia Esther Calleja Alor gave the figure during a hearing in Mexico's Chamber of Deputies.
Federal funding for the subsidies was set at about 85 billion pesos for 2026, while total annual support is estimated at 120 billion to 125 billion pesos.
The subsidies help millions of households pay less than the cost of supplying their electricity, with support also shaped by the higher power needs of hot regions.
The support also covers agricultural schemes, and Calleja said it relies on coordination among CFE, the finance ministry and the national energy regulator.
Separately, CFE is carrying out 83 electricity infrastructure projects worth 89.104 billion pesos, including upgrades to transmission and distribution.
The utility says these works are intended to support growing cities and industry, improve supply reliability and connect new power plants; further projects are also being planned.
Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission says it adds about 40 billion pesos of its own resources and savings to electricity subsidies.
The total annual support is estimated at 120 billion to 125 billion pesos, including about 85 billion pesos in federal funds planned for 2026.
The subsidies allow millions of households to pay electricity rates below the cost of supplying them.
The support also takes account of regions where high temperatures increase household electricity use and includes assistance for the agricultural sector.
CFE Director General Emilia Esther Calleja Alor said the subsidies are coordinated among several institutions.
