BYU student Carter Smith wins $3 million with College GameDay field goal

BYU student Carter Smith made a $3 million field goal during ESPN’s College GameDay program on Saturday.

Smith, who graduated from Underwood High School in Iowa in 2023, wore a Spider-Man costume for the contest.

The challenge, hosted by former NFL punter Pat McAfee, asks a selected fan to kick a 33-yard field goal.

Smith missed his first attempt but scored on his second, after the prize was raised from its usual $100,000 by additional offers from Utah Jazz and Utah Mammoth owner Ryan Smith and business partner Ryan Sweeney.

Half of Sweeney’s contribution was donated to charity, while the other half went to Carter Smith.

The successful kick earned Smith a share of the prize, and he later watched BYU beat Notre Dame to remain undefeated.

Smith is a biology student at BYU; no further steps or plans are given.
