Study examines school bag weight and back pain in children

Researchers examined school bags and back pain among 221 students in grades 1–9 at three schools in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic.

The children’s bags weighed an average of 4.87 kilograms, or 14.49% of their body weight.

Recommendations say a school bag should weigh no more than 10%–15% of a child’s body weight.

Nearly half reported back pain in the past month, but the study did not assess how severe the pain was or how much it affected daily life.

Researchers also considered factors such as how long children carried their bags and how heavy the bags felt.

The study looked for links between these factors and pain; it does not establish that bags caused the pain.
