Sheinbaum says Fox’s 2006 remarks back claims of election interference
Former Mexican president Vicente Fox said he worked to help Felipe Calderón win in 2006 and keep the presidency with his party, the PAN.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said Fox’s comments support claims of interference in the election, in which Calderón was declared the winner over Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The election was disputed, and López Obrador and his supporters called for a recount; Mexico’s electoral tribunal confirmed Calderón’s victory by about 234,000 votes.
Fox also said the electoral body had proved Calderón won, while acknowledging that his own actions were not very democratic.
Sheinbaum said the presidency should not be treated like a business passed from one leader to another.
Morena leader Ariadna Montiel Reyes also called the 2006 vote a dark episode for the electoral institute and said her party would continue its fight for democracy.
Montiel said Morena wants Mexico’s federal audit office to investigate past and current contracts at the institute.

What people are saying
This statement by Fox, well, proves us right.
Today Fox says two terrible things: one, that he participated in the 2006 election, and two, that governing Mexico is like running a company and that it is a business.
In 2006 comes the next election, which I made Calderón win.
You are going to leave power to someone from the PAN. So start working.
