Turkey’s parliament speaker calls for a region free of armed groups

Turkey’s parliament speaker Numan Kurtulmuş called for a region free of terrorism while meeting civil society representatives in Batman.

He said efforts to integrate armed groups into state structures are part of the process in Syria and Iraq.

Kurtulmuş said Syria’s new phase began after decades of dictatorship and expressed hope that the integration process there would be completed soon.

He said groups including the PYD, YPG and KCK were included in those efforts.

In Iraq’s Sinjar area, he said, a PKK-linked group with about 2,000 armed members had accepted and begun integration into the Iraqi army and security forces.

Kurtulmuş said steps toward a wider regional effort have begun, and that Iraq’s parliament speaker had told him a process to integrate armed groups in Iraq was expected to start in late September or early October.

He said the goal was to remove terrorism across the region, but gave no further timetable for completing the efforts.
