Boston Scientific launches FARAPOINT catheter in mainland China

Boston Scientific launched its FARAPOINT catheter in mainland China during the China International Import Expo in Shanghai.

It is intended for linear ablation in certain patients with persistent atrial fibrillation whose symptoms do not respond to medication.

Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rhythm, and catheter ablation uses energy to create areas of tissue that help control the rhythm.

FARAPOINT uses pulsed electric fields and is designed to make lines of treated tissue between the inferior vena cava and the tricuspid valve.

It adds a linear-ablation tool to the company's FARAPULSE platform, alongside catheters used for larger treatment areas such as pulmonary vein isolation.

The platform has been used for more than 20,000 patients in mainland China, according to the company.

In a clinical study, FARAPOINT ablation took about five minutes, and 97.9% of patients were free of typical atrial flutter recurrence at 360 days; the company says it will continue working with Chinese clinicians to support use and training.
