Eurozone inflation rises to 4% in October

Eurostat figures show inflation in the eurozone reached 4% in October, up from 3.8% in September.

This was the region’s highest rate in three years.

Energy prices rose 20.8% from a year earlier, making them the main driver of the increase.

Prices for services, food, alcohol and tobacco, and non-energy industrial goods also rose faster than in September.

Inflation varied across countries, with reported October rates ranging from 2.3% in Malta to 6.1% in Lithuania.

The rise strengthens the case for further European Central Bank rate increases, but the figures do not say whether the bank will act next.
