Dutch farmers criticize government’s nitrogen plans as insufficient

The Dutch government has presented a detailed nitrogen plan aimed at sharply reducing emissions by 2035 compared with 2019.

It includes limits on how many cows farms near vulnerable nature areas may keep per hectare.

Farmers’ groups say the plan still leaves key questions unanswered, including how much emissions must be cut and where.

They also say it is not yet clear whether the measures will be practical and affordable, and want the government to provide farmers with more certainty.

Environmental groups welcome steps toward nature recovery, which they say is needed to reduce pressure on protected areas.

Building projects may gain room to proceed, but permits can be issued only after emissions fall and nature recovers.

Farmers’ groups expect more intensive talks with the government, while the plan’s practical effects remain to be seen.
