New documentary follows Elizabeth Holmes before prison, but leaves motives unclear

A new documentary follows Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in the weeks before she went to prison.

Comedian Nathan Fielder and director Lance Oppenheim filmed her at home with her partner, Billy Evans, and their children.

Holmes was facing an 11-year sentence after Theranos falsely claimed its machines could run many blood tests from a single drop.

The film does not settle why Holmes defrauded investors or what motivated her; its director says he still does not understand why Holmes and Evans invited the crew into their home.

Holmes and Evans repeatedly asked the filmmakers to stay, even though Fielder says he offered to leave if they became uncomfortable.

Viewers are left unsure what to believe, as the film questions how people judge others and whether personal relationships affect those judgments.

There is no confirmed clinical diagnosis to explain Holmes’s behaviour, and claims about her mental health remain speculative.

The documentary is out in the United States and is due in UK cinemas on 20 November.
