Hulu’s Phony follows a teen who suspects his mother is an imposter
Hulu’s Phony centers on Sonny, a high school student in the Northwest.
He is close to his single mother, Ellen, who is also the principal at his school.
A car crash leaves Sonny in a coma for a week.
After he wakes, Sonny is convinced that Ellen is not really his mother and that an imposter has taken her place.
His friends doubt him, so Sonny turns to new allies, including a returning home-schooled student, her cousin and a private investigator who believes in conspiracies.
The series combines a mystery about identity with comedy about growing up, and its first season has eight episodes.
The mystery is still unresolved in the episodes reviewed, and the rest of the first season is yet to come.
