Alexandre Borges says his mother struggled with gambling

Actor Alexandre Borges said his mother struggled with gambling and that he sometimes went to collect her from illegal casinos in Brazil in the 1990s.

His mother, Rosa Linda Maria Borges, was retired and told him she gambled because she had little else to do.

What began as entertainment became a problem, Borges said, as she lost money and tried unsuccessfully to stop.

He said he supported her, spoke with her without blaming her and paid some bills she had left unpaid.

The experience helped shape his role as Ulisses, a character with a gambling addiction in the Brazilian TV drama *Quem Ama Cuida*.

The character loses his fortune through betting and his marriage ends.

Borges’s account highlights how gambling can harm a family, even when it starts as a way to pass the time.

His mother died in 2021 at age 83; the sources give no further next steps.
