Turkey and İzmir to assess transport projects, including a second ring road

Turkey’s transport minister and İzmir’s mayor discussed the city’s transport needs at a meeting in the ministry.

The plans cover roads, rail systems and maritime infrastructure in İzmir, a city in western Turkey.

Ministry teams are expected to visit İzmir within days to examine possible projects with the municipality.

They will review needs for İZBAN, the 136-kilometre commuter rail line jointly run by the municipality and Turkish State Railways.

The second ring road’s project work is complete, but officials are still discussing how to finance and build it.

They will also assess whether a rail tunnel between Konak and Karşıyaka is feasible; an earlier proposed crossing between İnciraltı and Çiğli was described as not yet feasible.

Technical reviews will help clarify decisions and responsibilities, while officials also plan to consider marinas and improvements to existing piers.
