North Korea tests air defense missile and stages cruise missile drill

North Korea said it tested a newly designed air defense missile system on Nov.

4, according to state media.

The test was meant to check the missile’s guidance, target-tracking and detection systems.

A cruise missile unit also practiced striking a simulated airport with a long-range missile.

South Korea’s military said it detected multiple missiles launched from the Sondok area on North Korea’s east coast toward the sea.

The reports connect those launches to the weapons activity, but South Korea said the missiles may have included a short-range ballistic missile.

The drills highlight North Korea’s efforts to improve its weapons systems and their combat reliability.

North Korea has not announced further tests or next steps.
