Securities group plans 1 trillion won to expand venture investment exits

The Korea Financial Investment Association held a seminar in Seoul on October 8 about how venture investors can get their money back.

Investors usually recover their money when a company goes public, is bought, or existing shares are sold.

In South Korea, about 85% of venture investment exits are tied to initial public offerings, or IPOs.

Speakers said this reliance is risky because the IPO market has been limited, while new venture and private equity funds have grown.

They called for a stronger secondary market, where investors can sell company shares or fund stakes to other investors before an IPO or sale of the company.

The association said about 1 trillion won will be invested over the next three years to help build this market.

Nine large investment banks are expected to invest about 700 billion won, while 15 securities firms will contribute 300 billion won to a joint fund.
