São Paulo PT lawmakers set to back João Jorge for council president

São Paulo's PT councillors are preparing to back João Jorge for president of the city council.

The party is expected to confirm its decision at a meeting on Tuesday, November 10, ahead of the council leadership election on December 15.

Jorge has the backing of Mayor Ricardo Nunes, who is also a member of the MDB party.

In return for its support, the PT is expected to seek control of one of the council's subject committees.

The PT has eight councillors, the largest group in the council, and its support could leave the PSOL as the only opposition party without a place in Jorge's camp.

Jorge still needs to win over the PL's city leader, Isac Félix, who says the party should put forward its own candidate.

The council vote on December 15 will decide whether Jorge secures the presidency.
