St Petersburg metro says stations can shelter people during emergencies

After a drone attack on St Petersburg during the night of October 17 to 18, people who were near metro stations went underground to wait out the danger.

More than 100 people reportedly took shelter in the stations.

The city says metro stations can serve as safe places during emergencies, alongside other designated locations.

District administrations are responsible for coordinating where residents should go for shelter.

The metro says it is ready to receive residents and visitors at its stations in an emergency.

The city says its response follows Russia’s civil-defence law and other rules for public protection.

The attack killed one person and injured five, and damaged residential buildings and other sites.

The sources do not say whether the metro has announced any further changes to its shelter arrangements.
