UW task force proposes making Allen School independent
A University of Washington task force recommended separating the Allen School from the College of Engineering in Seattle.
The Allen School is a major center for computer science and artificial intelligence, and its graduates help supply talent to the Seattle tech industry.
The task force said UW’s computing successes came despite its current structures and described tensions over resources and priorities; the engineering dean called the relationship complex rather than difficult.
Independence could give the Allen School more control over its finances and a seat among UW’s deans.
UW’s president and provost have not made a decision, and committees are now planning for a possible split and a campus-wide group to coordinate computing, data science and AI.
The committees are due to report by the end of winter quarter 2027, with UW leaders expected to announce next steps in spring; any changes would need university approvals, with a target of taking effect by the end of the 2027–28 academic year.
A University of Washington task force has recommended separating the Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering from the College of Engineering.
The proposed change would give the Allen School college-level independence, including greater control over its finances and a seat alongside UW’s other deans.
The task force report described a “difficult relationship” between the units and “significant distrust” across campus over resources and priorities.
UW President Robert J. Jones and Provost Tricia Serio said the university has not made a decision and established two committees to develop plans.
