JR Central begins passenger service with Doctor S Shinkansen
JR Central began passenger service with Doctor S on the Tokaido Shinkansen on October 26.
The new train is an N700S fitted with equipment to inspect railway infrastructure.
It takes over inspection work from Doctor Yellow, which retired last year.
Doctor S is designed to check track shape and the forces acting on overhead wires that supply electricity to trains.
Cameras in the driver’s cab can also spot obstacles such as trees and birds’ nests, potentially reducing the need for workers to inspect on foot.
Inspections are planned to start in January 2027, after testing, and JR Central plans to introduce four trains.
Using trains that also carry passengers is intended to make inspection work more efficient.
