Breakfast habits may reflect routine, stress and self-care, psychologist says

A regular breakfast may be part of a predictable morning routine.

Psychologist Neha Cadabam says that routine can reduce early-day decisions and help people feel more in control.

Skipping breakfast does not by itself mean someone has poor mental health or an unhealthy routine.

People may eat later by preference, or miss breakfast because of work, rushed mornings or changes in appetite.

But a sudden loss of interest in food, or increasingly chaotic eating alongside feeling overwhelmed, may signal wider changes in stress, mood or daily life.

Eating while working or rushing can reflect a sense of constant urgency, while a few quiet minutes to eat can mark a transition into the day.

The pattern matters more than any single meal, and lasting changes in eating or morning functioning alongside changes in mood, sleep, motivation or concentration may be worth attention.}
