Bayburt Council Seeks Seismic Studies to Check for Oil
Bayburt’s City Council asked the energy ministry and TPAO to investigate possible oil in the region.
The request concerns Orta Çimağıl, Saruhan, Kurbanpınar and Uluçayır, where water and mud samples collected in 2023 showed promising results.
Those results suggest the area may have oil potential, but they do not confirm that oil has been found.
The council wants geological and geophysical seismic studies included in the 2027 investment program to determine whether oil is present.
The council says oil exploration took place there in 1926 and 1930, and villagers have shared information about signs of oil in some locations.
If studies confirm oil, it could benefit Bayburt and the national economy; the requested scientific work is the next step.
Bayburt City Council applied to Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Ministry and the Turkish Petroleum Corporation to investigate the city’s potential for oil.
It asked for geological and geophysical seismic studies to be included in the 2027 investment program.
Water and mud samples collected in 2023 from four villages had positive results, which the council said may indicate oil potential.
The council said oil exploration had also taken place in the area in 1926 and 1930.
It said confirming oil reserves could benefit Bayburt and the national economy.
