South Korean opposition leader calls for three officials to resign

Jeong Jeom-sik, leader of South Korea’s People Power Party, called for three government officials to resign.

He named Agriculture Minister Song Mi-ryeong, Interior and Safety Minister Yoon Ho-jung and Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eok-won.

Jeong linked them to problems involving a farmland survey, the launch of a major-crime investigation agency and the introduction of single-stock leveraged exchange-traded funds.

These criticisms were Jeong’s claims, made during a news conference about the National Assembly’s government audit.

He said the officials should either accept responsibility or identify who was responsible for the policies.

The demands matter because they put pressure on the officials and the government during the audit period.

Jeong said his party would continue investigating appointments and what it described as political favoritism during the remaining audit period.
