Jakarta steps up river work ahead of the rainy season

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is stepping up river work ahead of the rainy season.

The work includes river normalization along the Ciliwung, Krukut, Cakung Lama and Mampang rivers in Jakarta.

The rainy season is expected to begin in late November 2026, and flooding is a recurring problem in the city.

Pramono said the Mampang area is especially prone to floods, which can occur there after 100 millimetres of rain in a day.

The city is also building water-holding ponds, clearing drains and repairing river junctions to prepare.

Pramono expects these measures to reduce flooding, and said the city will make the most of the remaining dry season to improve its flood-control facilities.
