Inquiry into Sandrine Bonnaire’s mother’s death closed without charges

French prosecutors closed the inquiry into the death of actress Sandrine Bonnaire’s mother, who died in August 2023.

Her mother was 84 and had lived for three years at a public care home in Saintes, in Charente-Maritime.

Bonnaire and her sisters filed a complaint in 2024, alleging neglect and mistreatment at the home, including problems with cleaning, toilet paper and hydration.

A medical expert’s report found some shortcomings in her care, but said they contributed to her death only indirectly, taking her prior health into account.

The evidence did not establish criminal fault, prosecutors said, so they closed the case without charges.

For an involuntary-homicide offence involving an indirect link to a death, prosecutors said the law requires a serious fault or a deliberate breach of a safety duty.

Bonnaire said she would speak publicly later when she had decided what to say next.
