PETA files complaint after barn fire kills two cows in Labersricht

A barn fire destroyed a cattle barn in Labersricht, a locality in Neumarkt in Bavaria, on October 10.

Two animals died and more than 150 were rescued from the barn, which had housed nearly 160 cattle, including cows and calves.

Farmers began moving animals to safety before firefighters arrived, and some cattle escaped into the surrounding area.

PETA filed a criminal complaint two days after the fire, while a local farmers’ representative criticised the barn’s fire safety.

The fire caused an estimated 1.5 million euros in damage, and no human injuries were reported.

Police are investigating what caused the fire; the available information does not say what action may follow PETA’s complaint.
