China begins selecting delegates for 2027 Communist Party congress

China’s ruling Communist Party has begun choosing delegates for its 21st national congress.

The congress is scheduled to take place in Beijing in the second half of 2027.

A total of 2,360 delegates will be elected by 38 electoral units across China.

The party says delegates should represent a range of backgrounds, including workers, farmers and professionals.

Selection will involve recommendations from local party organizations and members, followed by checks and elections.

The party has vowed zero tolerance for election violations, including bribery and attempts to disrupt voting.

The selection process is due to finish by the end of June 2027, ahead of a congress expected to bring a major reshuffle of China’s top political and military leadership.
