Indonesia investigates rising egg and chicken prices despite abundant supply

Indonesia's agriculture minister says consumers are paying more for eggs and chicken even though supply is abundant.

Egg prices at farms have fallen to 21,000 rupiah per kilogram, Amran Sulaiman told a news conference in Jakarta.

He said production is plentiful, and the government has arranged egg exports and asked the national nutrition agency to buy more eggs for its free-meal programme.

Those steps have not stopped farm prices from falling, according to Amran.

The gap between lower farm prices and higher consumer prices was noticed during weekly inflation meetings with the interior minister.

Amran has asked police to investigate who is behind the price gap, which he described as an anomaly.

He says the government will pursue those responsible, but gave no details about an investigation or its timing.

There is an anomaly. Prices at the farm level are falling, consumer prices are rising, and inflation is occurring.

If prices at the farm level fall, consumer prices should fall too, but people are complaining. That means there are irresponsible actors. We will pursue them.
