Italian government and banks clash over new tax burden
At an event in Italy, government officials and bank leaders clashed over new budget taxes on the financial sector.
Bank association president Antonio Patuelli and Intesa Sanpaolo chief Carlo Messina said banks were facing a concentrated tax burden and called for fairer treatment.
Messina said the government had set aside last year’s agreement for banks to contribute €10 billion over three years.
Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti argued that banks had benefited from state guarantees and other support, and said they should now help the state.
Acri president Giovanni Azzone also warned that a higher corporate tax on banking foundations could cut their funding for social projects.
Parliament may still change the measures, and Giorgetti said he would consider the concerns raised.
Italy’s government and banking sector clashed over a multibillion-euro contribution from financial firms included in the government’s budget plan.
Banking leaders said the measures concentrate the tax burden on their sector and called for fair treatment compared with other industries.
Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said banks had benefited from state support and should help the state during difficult times.
The dispute came to a head at a savings event organised by Acri.
Acri president Giovanni Azzone said foundations would be hit both by lower bank dividends and by a specific increase in Ires tax.
