Milan’s oldest hotel renews rooms while preserving its historic character

Milan’s Grand Hotel et de Milan has renovated its rooms and suites after decades with few changes.

The hotel opened in 1863 and is described as the city’s oldest.

Its family owners wanted to update the rooms without losing the building’s historic character.

Designers kept and restored original furnishings, while renewing fabrics and improving the lighting.

The suite where Giuseppe Verdi lived for nearly 30 years retains its historic style and his desk.

The hotel also preserves items linked to other guests, including Eleonora Duse’s bed and a stage fan she used.

The work was completed while the hotel stayed open, and the refreshed rooms are now visible to guests.
