Italian journalist Gerardo Bombonato dies at 75

Journalist Gerardo Bombonato died at 75, prompting tributes from colleagues and public officials in Bologna and Emilia-Romagna.

He worked as a reporter for Il Resto del Carlino and later as press office chief for the regional legislative assembly.

He led the Order of Journalists of Emilia-Romagna and served as vice-president of the regional press association.

An investigation over funding for a regional training course deeply affected him; he was later acquitted because the alleged act did not exist.

Tributes recalled his commitment to defending journalists’ work and press freedom, as well as his support for people in need.

A public farewell was scheduled for October 31 at Bologna’s Certosa cemetery, with a viewing from 12:45 to 13:45 and a ceremony at the Pantheon at 14:15.
