Realunit token holders can pay at more than 100 Spar stores

Realunit token holders can pay at more than 100 Spar stores

At an event in Zurich marking 50 years since Friedrich Hayek’s book on private money was published, Realunit announced a new way to spend its share tokens.

Holders can use the company’s app to pay at more than 100 Spar stores in Switzerland.

The payment is processed through Frankencoin, a digital stablecoin tied to the Swiss franc, and the store receives Swiss francs in its bank account.

The idea builds on Hayek’s argument for money issued outside government control.

His book appeared a few years after the Bretton Woods system of fixed exchange rates collapsed in 1971, followed by a wave of inflation.

The new payment option is a symbolic step for privately issued money, though the story says these tokens are unlikely to become a common way to pay for everyday shopping soon.
