South Korea plans a maritime growth hub across Busan, Ulsan and South Gyeongsang
South Korea is planning a southern maritime hub across Busan, Ulsan and South Gyeongsang to build a new growth centre outside the capital region.
The plan is part of a national strategy to spread development across five large regional zones and three special self-governing provinces, as population and jobs remain concentrated around the capital.
The hub would build on shipping and logistics while adding finance, tourism and maritime legal services.
Busan would be developed as a centre for maritime services, Ulsan would combine its manufacturing base with energy and port strengths, and South Gyeongsang would build on shipbuilding, machinery and defence industries.
The government says investment and skilled workers must take root locally for the region to grow, so it is also working on transport, housing, healthcare and other living conditions.
From next year, the transport ministry plans to support maritime skills training and trials by related businesses, while coordinating with other ministries and local governments.
