India's Supreme Court grants bail to former RG Kar hospital chief

India's Supreme Court granted bail to Sandip Ghosh in a corruption case involving RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Ghosh is the hospital's former principal and was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in September 2024.

He is accused of irregularities in hospital purchasing contracts and steering work to people close to him.

The case came to wider attention after allegations of corruption emerged following the rape and murder of a young doctor at the hospital in August 2024.

The Supreme Court said Ghosh had spent more than two years in custody, while only seven of 147 witnesses have testified.

It overturned the Calcutta High Court's earlier refusal to grant bail, which cited concerns about possible influence on witnesses.

The ruling allows Ghosh to leave custody on bail, while the trial continues.
