Paraná suspends school leaders after camera found in girls’ bathroom

A student found a small camera hidden in a girls’ bathroom at the Érico Veríssimo state school in Cambé, Paraná, Brazil.

The state education department suspended the school’s leadership on Wednesday and opened a commission to investigate what happened.

The department said a check found no other cameras in the bathrooms.

The school said its cameras were aimed at the bathroom entrances, not the private areas, and that the equipment had been removed.

Students told police they had raised concerns about the device more than three years ago, but were told it was a smoke detector.

Paraná rules ban cameras in school bathrooms and changing rooms, and violations may lead to administrative, civil or criminal accountability.

The investigation will establish the circumstances and determine what action should follow.

It is an obvious matter: you do not put a camera inside a bathroom; we already have federal laws on this.

We clarify that the cameras mentioned were aimed at the entrance doors of the boys’ and girls’ bathrooms, without capturing the areas used for students’ physiological needs.
