Cyclist Tofik Beshir remains unconscious in intensive care after crash

Tofik Beshir, a 19-year-old cyclist and freshman at Lees-McRae College, remains unconscious in intensive care after a collision during a training ride.

The crash happened on a gravel road near Banner Elk, North Carolina, on October 8.

He was taken by air to a hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Details of his injuries have not been publicly confirmed, though a fundraising page describes them as consistent with brain shear trauma.

Beshir recently won the US Cyclocross Series title and is known for competing in several cycling disciplines.

A fundraiser is seeking $200,000 for his medical treatment, rehabilitation and family expenses.

His coach has asked supporters to avoid visiting the hospital, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
