Romanian court extends Calin Georgescu’s pre-trial detention by 30 days
A Bucharest appeals court extended Calin Georgescu’s detention by 30 days, overturning a lower court’s decision to place him under house arrest.
Prosecutors allege that Georgescu and two other suspects persuaded a Romanian businessman to give them €1.1 million by promising help securing a credit line from a foreign financial institution.
Georgescu denies wrongdoing and says the investigation is politically motivated.
He was the leading vote-getter in the first round of Romania’s 2024 presidential election, but the vote was annulled after allegations of Russian interference, which Moscow denied.
He was later barred from running again, and pro-European centrist Nicusor Dan won the rerun in May 2025.
Georgescu’s detention is set to continue until November 27, while supporters have protested and demanded his release.
Prosecutors have also accused him in a separate case of inciting violence and other offences after the election was annulled.
The Bucharest Court of Appeal extended Calin Georgescu’s pre-trial detention by 30 days.
The decision overturned a lower court ruling that would have moved him to house arrest.
